Creating a home altar

If you’re looking for a way to create a special space in your home where you can go to meditate, perform your sacred rituals or prayers, or simply carve out a little oasis of calm amidst the chaos of life then a home altar may be perfect for you.

Creating an altar in your home makes embracing daily practice easy, and is a beautiful way to honour your spiritual beliefs and incorporate calming and grounding in your daily life.

You may be wondering how you go about setting up an altar, so here are our top tips for setting up a home altar that is personal and meaningful to you.

1. Choose a location for your home altar

The first step in setting up a home altar is to choose a location. It can be in a prominent location such as a living room, or in a more private space like a bedroom. Wherever you choose make sure it is somewhere you feel comfortable and will be able to use regularly.

2. Select a surface

The next step is to select a surface for your altar. This could be a small table, shelf, or even a windowsill. Think about this carefully; if you want to burn candles on your altar then don’t pick a shelf with another shelf above it!

You need somewhere large enough to hold your chosen items but not so big that it becomes cluttered. We suggest you choose a surface that is easy to clean and maintain.

3. Choose meaningful items for your altar

The items you choose to place on your altar should be meaningful to you and reflect your spiritual beliefs.

You may wish to cover your surface with an altar cloth, a silk scarf or a scrap of your favourite fabric. You could incorporate a statue of a deity or angel, or a symbol of your faith, crystals, candles, or anything else that resonates with you. Choose items that inspire and motivate you to connect with your inner self.

4. Consider the elements

When setting up an altar, you may wish to incorporate items representing all elements to encourage balance. Or perhaps you feel drawn to one element in particular?

You could incorporate items that represent earth, air, fire, and water. For example, a bowl of water, a feather, a candle, and a crystal could represent each of these elements respectively.

Different crystals also each have different elemental associations. By being mindful of the elements, you make sure your altar is a balanced and harmonious space.

5. Create a focal point

Give your altar a focal point, something that draws your attention and helps you focus your intentions. This could be anything that is meaningful to you; a statue, a photo or drawing, a symbol, or a crystal grid. Choose something that resonates with and inspires you.

6. Add personal touches

Adding sentimental items makes your home altar a more personal space that will work for you. You might add a picture of a loved one, a piece of jewellery, or a special trinket. These can help you to create a deeper connection to your altar and draw you deeper into your spiritual practice. They can really make the difference between simply a collection of objects, and a truly sacred space.

7. Keep it clean

Keeping your altar clean is important to maintaining its sanctity. Regularly dust your altar, clean any items that become dirty, change water, refresh essential oils and cleanse and charge your crystals. This helps maintain the tranquil energy of your altar.

A home altar can be a beautiful way to connect with your inner self and make it easier to practice your beliefs every day. Remember, your altar should be personal to you, and may be completely different to everyone else’s. Your altar will be unique, just like you!Have you taken the time to create a space that feels right for you? We would love to see them. Share a photo with us on Facebook or Instagram.
